Blå, Oslo, 21/09/19, Release concert
Hell yeah! – This phrase basically sums up the release concert of Krokofant’s fourth album, “Q” (Rune Grammofon). This time the band extended from trio to quintet with a unique contribution of their good friends: bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and organist Ståle Storløkken. The album is freshly released (27/09/19) and you can order it here.
This time Blå was filled with devoted fans wearing t-shirts with “Krokofant” writing, tourists from UK not knowing what’s gonna happen soon behind the colorful walls of Blå or Norwegians who just peacefully wanted to drink their beer outside, enjoying a warm, autumnal evening in Oslo.
After seeing Krokofant with Ingebrigt and Ståle for the first time in December 2018 at Victoria, I can say that this concept was meant to be from the beginning. Progressive jazz, with psychedelic, long parts swollow you in one piece. Then spit you out with strong melodic tunes and amazing combination of organ and saxophone on top. The joint partnership with Håker Flaten and Storløkken empowers Krokofant and together they create a mindblowing group, which seems to always take one step more and stand ahead on the Norwegian jazz-rock scene.
Each piece was like a slowly increasing explosion, and all band members contributet to it – Jørgen with the leading, crazy melodic parts, in the dialogue with Ståle and his magic keys, Tom filling up with facy riffs, and then there is the rythm section of you dreams – Ingebrigt and Axel. Together they bond and crank each other, and play in madness til’ their last breath. You just wanna join them in this frantic state, scream, dance or do whatever this music makes you do! And you wish it would never stop… God save the progressive jazz!
After a long begging with applause and whistling from the audience, we got one extra, but short piece. The moment when the music died away was like a shot from the starting pistol, and a bunch of prog-jazz enthusiasts started running to get the newest album from the merchandise booth. It was a release-concert after all, so Rune Kristoffersen supplied it well. After an uneven fight, with outshouting and pushing through drunk dudes with madness in their eyes, I got my very own copy on the LP. Check out how musicians graced it with their signatures here.
To honor the victorious bout, it was time to grab another beer, say hi to some old friends, and make new ones. First I got to catch up with Ingebrigt. We have recorded a lot of cool stuff and talked about exciting things coming in the nearest future! I will write more about this very soon, so stay tuned!
I couldn’t miss the chance to meet the Krokofant-crew and Ståle, so I humbly began with asking them for the signatures. They turned out to be really cool guys, so we’ve talked a bit more, clinked glasses and topped it out with Skål! (cheers in Norwegian). Well, there was only one thing left to do. Just listen here, you won’t regret it. As I mentioned, they are really cool and funny guys 🙂
And all of a sudden I realized that Blå turned into a dj-party with dance music and too many people who just didn’t know what to do with themselves. It was time to leave.
Jørgen Mathisen – saxophone, Tom Hasslan – guitar, Axel Skalstad – drums, Ståle Storløkken – organ, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten – bass
