Norwegian clarinetist Andreas Røysum and the legendary Chicago-based poet and artist, Marvin Tate, met in 2023, when both were performing at Jazzfest Berlin. “Andreas Røysum Ensemble with Marvin Tate” is the fourth album by the ensemble, and contains the first recorded fruits of this meeting of visionaries. The new-found collaborators bring out the best in each other, reaching new levels of expression and purpose.
Dig into richly evocative and multi-layered poetry, expansive long form compositions and hard-hitting bangers, performed by a killer band who have been sharpening their interplay by years of touring!
The combination of Røysum’s punchy but esoteric arrangements for the ensemble and Tate’s forcefully declaimed poetry is powerful and makes for an intriguing album. – Tony Dudley-Evans for UK Jazz News
The album features four pieces that blend Tate’s gospel and soul-tinged roots with Røysum Ensemble’s seminal influences from Afro-American free jazz, especially of the Chicagoan school of free jazz. Røysum Ensemble’s uncompromising yet seductive arrangements complement Tate’s evocative and soulful poetry and his powerful delivery. – Eyal Hareuveni, Salt penauts
