Fun to share a bit more about my story and how I ended up establishing No Earplugs and started working with my biggest musical heroes! Cortex and Marthe Lea Band played two fantastic concerts at We Jazz on 2.12 and 3.12 and they totally brought some new and fresh Norwegian vibes to Finland! Marthe Lea Band stole a lot of Finnish hearts (audience gave us an amazing feedback and assured to continue to listen to MLB music) as well as one big Portuguese heart… Check out this amazing recap of We Jazz by Rui Miguel Abrau for Rimas e Batidas with a long paragraph about MLB concert: “To describe the concert as “impressive” is an understatement.” ❤

Dagsavisen, one of the biggest newspapers in Norway, has chosen THE BEST Norwegian jazzalbums of 2021. In a good company, three bands that No Earplugs represents, were listed: Jonas Cambien Trio “Nature Hath Painted the Body”, Marthe Lea Body “Asura” and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten’s Exit Knarr ❤

Deichman musikk summed up 2021 with the best albums and I couldn’t be more proud to find Marthe Lea Band, Jonas Cambien Trio and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten‘s Exit Knarr (some even listed several times!!!) on their toplist, amongst many great releases 
Andreas Hoem Røysum Ensemble “Fredsfanatisme” was also a strong candidate for this list, while Motvind Records was named as “the record label of the year”!

Such an honor to participate in a vibrant and so important discussion about sustainable touring and its future, last Friday at We Jazz Festival 2021 in Helsinki. Together with Katariina Uusitupa (managing director at We Jazz) and Michael Lettenmeier (Doctor of Arts, M.Sc., Environmental Science and Policy and managing director of D-mat ltd.), we tackeled this difficult and maybe even scary topic for some, but I think we all got out of this panel with hope and inspiration for a change🍀🌞 Audience reactions and sharing thoughts with each other was so inspiring and heart warming. Many kiitos to @wejazzhelsinki – THE BEST team ever with empowering energy ❤

Cortex played two shows in Poland last weekend – 22nd October at Jazz Jantar Festival in Gdansk, which was almost sold out (with a few free seats left), and in Warsaw at Jassmine Club on Saturday, 23rd October – this show was completely sold out and the full house had 200 people in the audience!
Here is a short recap from this fantastic concert:
Zaczynamy jesienny trans Główna, jesienna edycja festiwalu Jazz Jantar wystartowała! Na początek mieliśmy Chrisa Pitsiokosa, czyli kwintet, który przeobraził się w solistę oraz norweski kwartet Cortex, który zaczął koncert w nominalnej obsadzie, kończąc jako kwintet. Brzmi może nieco tajemniczo, ale wszystko wyjaśnię poniżej. Nowojorski saksofonista altowy Chris Pitsiokos grał już na Jazz Jantar trzy lata temu w trio i pozostawił po sobie bardzo dobre wrażenie. Na jesień 2021 zakontraktował się na czele kwintetu, co zapowiadało jeszcze potężniejsze i bardziej energetyczne brzmienie i dawało kuszącą szansę poznania kolejnych postaci z młodej sceny nowojorskiej. Niestety żyjemy w czasach zarazy i na niespełna dwa tygodnie przed występem okazało się, że reszta składu nie może przylecieć do Polski z przyczyn zdrowotnych i Chris będzie musiał dać w Gdańsku solowy recital. Co oczywiście, jako profesjonalista, zrobił. Wszedł na scenę w jasnej dżinsowej koszuli i w granatowych dżinsach, ale uwagę – z ubioru – przyciągały przede wszystkim imponujące brązowe kowbojki. Szybko zabrał się do grania na alcie i tu znów zaskoczenie: najbardziej przewidywalne były solowe improwizacje w stylu free, w końcu Ornette Coleman był także saksofonistą altowym, albo improwizacje mocno wsparte elektroniką. Nie poszedł żadną z tych dróg, wybrał trzecią, którą było zaprezentowanie możliwości samego instrumentu oraz samego wykonawcy, czyli coś w rodzaju pokazu demonstracyjnego. Saksofonista szeroko zastosował technikę okrężnego oddechu, która umożliwia granie powtarzalnych sekwencji dźwięków przez kilka minut, używał saksofonowych klapek w funkcji perkusyjnej, nawet grał dmąc w czarę saksofonu. Abstrakcyjne ciągi dźwięków nie niosły żadnych specjalnie określonych emocji, były raczej manifestacją, ale bo kilkunastu minutach gry, same stawały się przekazem. Myślę sobie jednak, że gdyby tę muzykę zapisać i przearanżować na kontrabas, wiolonczelę czy gitarę, byłaby odebrana jako standardowa awangarda i nikogo by nie zdziwiła na przykład na Dniach Muzyki Nowej. Za to Cortex został określony przez recenzenta portalu „Jazzwise” jako „awangardowa muzyka imprezowa” trochę wynika to zapewne z chęci oswojenia free-jazzu w celu przemycenia go bardziej konserwatywnym lub ostrożnym słuchaczom, ale faktem jest, że najnowszy materiał Cortex, już nagrany, ale nawet jeszcze nie zmiksowany, który został zaprezentowany w Gdańsku, bardzo obficie korzysta z wybitnie tanecznego podgatunku jazzu, mianowicie afro-beatu. To, co w Żaku zgrali trębacz Thomas Johansson, saksofonista Kristoffer Berre Alberts, kontrabasista Ola Hoyer i perkusista Andreas Wildhagen, można wręcz nazwać kameralnym czy też kieszonkowym afro-beatem. Muzykom rewelacyjnie udało się połączyć afrobeatową melodykę, pustynną energię, podniosłe linie sekcji dętej z wolną improwizacją w europejskim stylu. Muzyka totalnie szalona, równocześnie bezbłędnie wykonana przez czterech znakomitych improwizatorów. Publiczność była głodna bisu i dostała go. Na scenę Cortex wyszedł z Pitsiokosem, którego alt idealnie dopełnił muzyczną tkankę skandynawskiego zespołu. Może z tego będzie coś w przyszłości, nie wiem. Widziałem za to na własne oczy jak Norwegowie długo po północy popijali z Amerykaninem w hallu klubu Żak.

NEW RELASE ALERT! Legal Tender, Cortex’s 6th album is out now on Clean Feed Records!
Free jazz? Well, not exactly. This quartet from Norway took that tradition as a basis, but the original African-American free jazz never sounded like this. The magazine Jazzwise chose better words to describe Cortex’s blasts of energy: «Avant-garde party music». Instead of the pathways to spiritual ascension, or the revolt against the Man, Thomas Johansson, Kristoffer Berre Alberts, Ola Høyer and Gard Nilssen play music to party to and to be joyful, and that’s also political and sacred in these times of suffering, hatred and disbelief. The composed themes are simple and with no ornaments, giving to the improvised developments all the needed space and all the complexity we like to hear in creative music. The pieces are intense, dramatic and noisy, inviting you to move your body and constantly defying your mind and your soul. Do you remember when Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, or John Zorn and Dave Douglas, played together? Cortex is that next thing you were waiting for…

It’s official! No Earplugs has been chosen for Music Norway’s Master Program 2020/21 together with other talented peers from the music industry. It is a leadership program for industry professionals, with lots of meetings, workshops, networking and professional guidance from August 2020 to June 2021. So stoked to be a part of this! Can’t wait to meet all the participants, discuss new ideas and expand my network.
