Andreas Røysum Ensemble

When he gathers nine of his best friends and favorite musicians in Andreas Røysum Ensemble his fascination with traditional musics from Asia and Africa blend with the fire of revolutionary free jazz and the expansive formal sense of contemporary western notated music. Luckily, we´re not dealing with a toothless pastiche of hip references, but rather an appreciation and understanding elements of Music.

“FREDSFANATISME” (Motvind Records, 2021)

Their sophomore offering, the double LP “Fredsfanatisme”, is out October 2021. Røysum says that musicians like Anthony Braxton, Marvin Gaye, Vashti Bunyan, Roscoe Mitchell, Shirley Collins, Hildegard Von Bingen & Zia Mohiuddin Dagar brought lots of color to his life in the period when this music was created, but quickly adds that “my dear fellow musicians Signe, Marthe, Henriette, Hans, Joel, John-Andrew, Christian & Ivar are my biggest inspirations. I´m not only standing on the shoulders of giants, but also shoulder to shoulder with them as far as my ears can tell. I rejoice in the music of the Ensemble and how it grows. Who knows what a future in such good company might entail with regards to creative spiritual escapades.”

For years, Norwegian clarinetist Andreas Røysum has been all over the place with bands like Miman, Nakama, Marthe Lea Band, Alasdair Roberts & Völvur, Tristan Honsinger Trio and in duo with Axel Dörner.

The Ensemble released their self-titled debut in March 2020, and have in regards to that been called «a musical national team», «the only freaks in Norwegian jazz» and «some of the most interesting musicians in the country». The ensemble believes in musics trancendental and unifying force, and use Røysum’s strong compositions as a diving board for melting together as one; for expanding time and space.
